This pathway leading from the Abbey was one of the walkways which led to the wall round the Abbey grounds, the line of which you will cross as you leave the children's play park. This, then, takes you out of the immediate vicinity of the Abbey as you head towards Newstead where the stonemason builders of the Abbey lived. The pathway leads you through the relatively new housing scheme with the burns on your left being the mill lade from the Abbey and the Malthouse Burn. Beyond them, across the flat land, is the Tweed. In very wet weather the Tweed still inundates these flats, and probably has always done so, despite the best efforts of the monks who in time past built a hidden barrier of wooden piles and a stone wall to try to keep the waters back off their fields.
