Harestanes
Once a busy farm, Harestanes Countryside Visitor Centre is now one of the Scottish Borders best-loved attractions.
Managed by Scottish Borders Council Museum and Gallery Service, the centre is open daily from 1 April - 31 October, 10am - 5pm, and admission is free.
The visitor centre hosts an exciting programme of exhibitions, events, activities and guided walks, most with a natural heritage or Scottish Borders theme. There's also an excellent tea room, gift shop, toilets and lots of wildlife and visitor information. A free annual events leaflet is available from Visitor Information Centres, libraries and from Harestanes.
Harestanes has one of the largest outdoor children's play parks in the Borders and offers great opportunities for discovering the Scottish Borders countryside with a variety of walk routes.
The centre's ground floor, courtyard, toilets and wildlife garden are wheelchair-accessible, while a 1-mile circular woodland route is suitable for accompanied wheelchairs.Harestanes is also home to Scottish Borders Council Countryside Ranger Service which organises guided walks and events across the region. A free annual guided walks programme 'Out & About in the Scottish Borders' is available from Visitor Information Centres, libraries and the visitor centre.
Neighbouring craft businesses range from contemporary Scottish furniture, leather handbags and tile specialists to jewellery and basket-making.
Not far from Harestanes is the village of Ancrum.
